After many years of planing, I am finally ready to build my tiny house in the middle of nowhere. I managed to procure a 9 acre lot in western MA for my house lot. The land is in the middle of nowhere on a fairly large but generally quiet road.
I plan to do all the work myself where possible and I will take pictures and share what I expect to be a long journey in this blog. Hopefully some of the things I have learned will help others to follow…maybe we can be neighbors.
As the title of this blog suggests, I will be building Jay Shaffers Bodega model which is 260 square feet. I will be making extensive modifications to it so it is better suited to the New England climate.
The lot I purchased had a dirt driveway already on it. Whoever put it in also installed some utility poles which I will use to get DSL to my house. This will be an off the grid home, so there will be no need for power lines but its nice to have poles in place should I ever decide to add grid power.
I have created a “camping” area that includes a small barn and my prototype tiny house shown below. The prototype is based on Jay Shaffers XS house and was finished a couple of years ago. I fenced in the area to keep honest people honest and now I have a nice staging area for building my full-time “big” house.
The next thing I have finished is the septic design. I hired Clear Water Environmental to do the engineering work for me. Liz and her husband performed the perc test and drew up plans for a 3 bedroom septic system (they did a nice job highly recommend them BTW). Those plans were approved without issue by the board of health. The conservation commission needs to approve the project in a few days. I will do a post about the septic system in another post.
I am waiting for septic and well quotes from 5 vendors. I also have a hearing with the conservation commission on the 9th. On the 10th I will be pulling the well permit and hopefully the septic permit too.
In the meantime I still have a bunch of trees to clear and brush to chip. I’ll post some pics soon.
